After Malia’s Graduation, Obamas Lunch at Cafe Milano

Malia Obama graduated from Sidwell Friends School this morning and decided to bring her family and friends to Cafe Milano for a post-graduation celebration. Such an occasion can be special enough, but when your father is the President of the United States — it takes things to another level.

After tying up traffic on Wisconsin Avenue in front of Sidwell, the Obama motorcade arrived at the Prospect Street restaurant, which remained open for lunch. Police closed a one-block stretch of the street to vehicular traffic. A crowd gathered on either side of the restaurant and were asked to remain about 25 feet from the restaurant. The Obama party was held on Cafe Milano’s second floor special events space, which once housed The Georgetowner Newspaper office in the 1990s.

“They couldn’t have picked a better day,” said Franco Nuchese, owner of the longtime, popular people-watching restaurant on Prospect Street.

The Obamas’ newest high school graduate will take a year off before matriculating at Harvard University in fall 2017. Malia’s sister, Sasha Obama, is also having a special day — it’s her 15th birthday today.

The Obamas left Cafe Milano just before 3 p.m. The president did not speak at his daughter’s graduation.
