•Wearing only strategically placed lettuce leaves, five of PETA’s sexy “Lettuce Ladies” offered Tofurky veggie dogs July 14 at PETA’s annual Congressional Veggie Dog Lunch outside the Rayburn House Office Building. Helping congressional staffers beat the heat, they gave out dairy-free Tofutti Cuties frozen treats. The summer recess for the House and Senate begins Friday afternoon.
“If you want to help the environment, your health or animals, you can start by choosing a veggie dog over a tube of pig intestines,” says Ashley Byrne, director of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Today is National Hot Dog Day — hence, PETA’s alternative to the standard American frankfurter with its special meat products.
According to PETA, “in addition to having a smaller carbon footprint, each person who goes vegan spares more than 100 animals a year daily suffering and a terrifying death in today’s industrialized meat, egg and dairy industries. Vegans also have a reduced risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and strokes”
