The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities presents a visual arts exhibition featuring some of the District’s finest visual artists applying for the FY 2017 Arts and Humanities Fellowship Program). Each artist has submitted a piece that represents their body of work and artistic perspective. This exhibition captures the broad scope of the District’s dynamic art scene and provides an opportunity for the artists to express their visions directly to the panel of peer reviewers evaluating their applications and to the public.

Writing and producing an independent film takes years, but it can be done if you take the right steps. This course will cover the essential ingredients to writing and producing a low-budget, independent film. In the course, participants will discuss both feature films and documentaries. They will also discuss scripts, the target market, budgets, financing, networking and important contacts.

**Josephine Baker: March on Washington, 1963**

Scholar and artist Shawn Hart looks at the side of famed dancer and chanteuse Josephine Baker many don’t know about. Although Baker found fame and notoriety as an entertainer “outside” the United States, in her later years she used that notoriety to be a voice of protest during the 1960s civil rights struggle. In 1963 she was one of numerous African American celebrities who participated in the famous March on Washington. Listen to Baker’s stirring remarks made just before Reverend King took to the podium to make his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech and see rare, archival photographs of Baker in these later years.

On the night of April 14, 1865, Detective James McDevitt was on duty at the Washington Metropolitan Police headquarters, a half-block from Ford’s Theatre. Just before 10:30 p.m., frantic witnesses rushed in with horrifying news: President Lincoln had been shot at the theatre. Join Detective McDevitt as he revisits the sites from the investigation into the Lincoln Assassination Conspiracy. This walking tour of downtown Washington, D.C.,, recommended for ages 8 and older, makes eight stops. It does not include entrance into Ford’s Theatre. Also Thursday 7/28 and Friday 7/29 at 6:45.

**Kitchen Sink Fest at Dance Place**

The Kitchen Sink Fest is a mega-collaborative, movement-based performance project with theater technology and design as its core. The evening’s 50 fast-paced, one-minute pieces, juxtaposed with 10 meditative installation works, will emerge from collaborations between producer Ben Levine and D.C.’s most daring dance-makers, including Erica Rebollar, Tia Nina, Sarah Beth Oppenheim, Sharon Mansur and Hayley Cutler. Portrait Discovery Kits are an interactive and imaginative way for visitors to learn more about people who are in the National Portrait Gallery. The kits offer a self-guided tour, “Seek and Find” cards, “Portrait Detective” and “Historian Guides” and a “Compare and Contrast” activity using a doll. Now in their 29th year, this legendary band recently won two 2015 WAMMIE awards: “Best Roots Rock Band” and, for the Grandsons Jr (their moniker for the kids-oriented music), “Best Children’s Artist.” Having toured Europe, Asia and Canada, a fan aptly described The Grandsons’ exuberant sound as “American music in a blender with the lid off.” The more prominent elements in this eclectic whirlpool are New Orleans rhythm and blues, rockabilly, swing and country two-steps.

In a whirlwind of interconnected scenes performed by a hand-picked cast of brilliant improvisers, they’re going to tell you a story about your own life. Quick heads up, though: it doesn’t end well.
