Teens in the award-winning program “Investigating Where We Live” revisit neighborhoods along the Anacostia River explored by previous participants to compare then and now. Using program archives, interviews and research at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., they design and install a brand new exhibition showing their view of how D.C. is evolving and where they think it will be 20 years from now. This is the opening for this year’s exhibition.

Since the ancient Italians first came together to create the great metropolis of Rome, Italy has been at the forefront of cutting-edge design in all fields, including architecture. Steve Alden, AIA, describes how Italian architects continued to push the boundaries of design over the past century, from the futuristic aspirations of Antonio Sant’Elia and radical influence of Superstudio to the iconic visions of Mario Bellini and the urban ambitions of 5+1AA architectures. Attendees will leave with a deeper appreciation for the synonymous relationship between Italy and high design, as well as a greater understanding of the effect of Italian architecture on global design trends.

Batik, which means “wax writing” in Indonesian, is an ancient technique for creating designs and patterns on fabric. Students explore this magical art, layering colors of dyes, resisting with wax and creating beautiful cloth. Colors, dyes, discharges, design, resources and modern ways to achieve a batik “look” are covered.
