College Students Begin Arriving Friday

They’re back . . . almost. Already this week, west side residents have been observing the advance team for Georgetown University’s student orientation and move-in weekend. Students will begin arriving in earnest — as well as from New Jersey — by the end of the week. Freshmen and new students are due on campus Friday, Aug. 26.

The university says it expects its main and east campuses “to be busy during the weekend.” Neighbors can expect some extra traffic on 35th Street NW, especially between Prospect and P Streets, as well as north of Reservoir Road in Burleith.

Not to worry, neighbors, the nation’s oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in America has gotten better and better each year in handling students’ arrivals and residents’ concerns.

During the move-in weekend, the Office of Neighborhood Life will operate SNAP — Student Neighbor Assistance Program, a safety service that helps students and responds to neighbors’ complaints about student conduct off campus — 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., Friday and Saturday, and 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., Sunday and Monday. The university is also running a move-in drive for students and will collect bulk trash from students moving into off-campus houses.

Georgetown University invites its neighbors to join students, faculty and administrators for the Mass of the Holy Spirit — 4:30 p.m, Tuesday, Aug. 30 — on the White-Gravenor Esplanade near the main gate at 37th and O Streets to mark the start of the new academic year. Classes begin Aug. 31.
