•Supporters of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, rallied outside the White House, then marched past the Trump International Hotel to the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Washington, D.C., protesters were reacting to President Donald Trump’s expected announcement that he would end the Obama-era immigration program.
The DACA program granted work permits to 787,580 undocumented immigrants who came into the U.S. prior to their 16th birthdays. Organized by the immigrant activist organization CASA de Maryland, the protest featured testimonials by several individuals at risk for deportation, commonly known as DREAMers. Tom Perez, current chair of the Democratic National Committee, and several representatives from labor and the clergy lent their support.
