Fans Celebrate as Caps Take Cup (photos)

Washington Capitals fans celebrated outside the Capital One Arena after watching the Stanley Cup Finals Game 5 on a large television screen on Thursday, June 7, in Washington D.C. The Caps, who were playing at Las Vegas that night, defeated the Vegas Golden Knights, 4-3, to win the Stanley Cup.

Nearby, the United States Navy Memorial replaced its previously scheduled Movies on the Memorial showing of “Anchors Aweigh” with a live screening of the game on its new jumbo outdoor movie screen. The Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery Building south facade lit up red.

It has been 26 long years since the Redskins won the last major sports championship for D.C., when most of those who populated 7th Street NW on Thursday were not yet born. It was a night to celebrate. It was 40 years to the day when the Washington Wizards won the NBA title. And, of course, it was the first title ever for the Washington Capitals in its 44-year franchise history.
