If you were hanging out at Washington Harbour late Saturday afternoon, June 9, you got more people-watching and special beers that you ever expected. Seems Georgetown is the place to celebrate mightily.
Alex Ovechkin and some of his fellow Capitals showed up with the Stanley Cup, jumped in the center fountain and partied with everyone at Tony and Joe’s Seafood Place and Nick’s Riverside Grill.
The Capitals were doing a victory lap across the region. After appearing at Nationals Park, they stopped in Georgetown to make some major noise to the delight of stunned fans.
After drinking beer from the Stanley Cup — a required, continual ritual, it is believed — Ovi and his buds jumped on the bus and went to Cafe Milano, where they happened to meet Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who were having dinner there. Along with those in the restaurant and those outside, the cup got its proper reverence with more beers. Even Cafe Milano manager Laurent Menoud had a draught. The crowd sang along with the Caps: “We Are The Champions.”
Later, Ovi had to go home after his nonstop partying and other Caps checked out Gypsy Sally’s and Connecticut Avenue into the wee hours.
Today, Ovi and the Caps and the cup are in New York City. According to the Russian Machine Never Breaks website: “The Capitals will make their first talk show appearance as Stanley Cup champions on ‘The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.’ ”
The celebration will continue Tuesday, June 12. Tomorrow’s Caps parade begins at 11 a.m. on Constitution Avenue — proceeding from 17th to 7th Streets NW — with a stage set up on the National Mall and the U.S. Capitol as the backdrop.
Now that will be some parade.
