Canal Road Reopens to Traffic

The District Department of Transportation reopened Canal Road NW around 11:30 a.m. today, July 15, after completion of sinkhole repairs. There had been a week of closures of Canal Road from Arizona Avenue to Foxhall Road.

On July 8, the District experienced heavy rains and flash flooding causing portions of Canal Road to be closed temporarily to allow floodwaters to recede. Additional structural damage — a sinkhole — from the flooding event created a hazard for residents and commuters caused the road to be closed again on July 10.

After a full inspection of the roadway, DDOT determined that emergency repairs were necessary and might take approximately one week to complete. The repairs were completed earlier than expected. According to DDOT, additional work may be necessary for the long-term stability of the roadway.
