Tennis Shoes, Tributes at Southeast Tennis and Learning Center

The 25th anniversary of the Recreation Wish List Committee was celebrated on Nov. 2 at Anacostia’s Southeast Tennis and Learning Center gala. The committee was founded by former D.C. first lady Cora Masters Barry.

Accolades and tributes abounded for community supporters, sports figures and political leaders, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, publicist Raymone Bain and NBA star Isiah Thomas. The evening program occurred under the dome of this landmark educational and sports facility, which was transformed into a “tennis white and gold theme.” With tuxes or cocktail attire, attendees wore tennis shoes to add to the evening’s fun — some with specialized embossed slogans, such as “Go Nats” or the D.C. flag.
