Hoyas Defeat Samford for 5th Consecutive Win (photos)

Center Omer Yurtseven scored a career-high 32 points and 17 rebounds, plus four blocked shots, to lead the Georgetown men’s basketball team (9-3, Big East) to a 99-71 win over the Samford Bulldogs (6-8, Southern) of Birmingham, Alabama, on Dec. 21 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Sophomore Mac McClung added 25 points to go along with his 5 assists and a career-high seven rebounds.

It was the team’s fifth consecutive victory as it tries to shake off the impact of losing four roster players, including two starters, to transfer in recent weeks. McClung’s game has clearly picked up. He was averaging 11.9 points per game before the transfers and 22.2 per game since Dec. 2. He is shooting over 40 percent from the three-point circle versus less than 28 percent last year.

Brandon Austin led Samford with 26 points and Josh Sharkey had 24. The smaller Bulldogs were out-rebounded, 53-30.

Georgetown’s next game will come against hometown rival American University (4-6, Patriot League) at Capital One Arena on Saturday, Dec. 28, at noon. Following that game, the Hoyas will begin Big East play on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Providence (6-6, Big East).
