Dance Tribute to Marian Anderson

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton was the guest of honor at the National Portrait Gallery as the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company debuted “A Tribute to Marian Anderson” to honor the legendary opera singer and civil rights icon on Feb. 3. The exhibit “Marian Anderson One Life,” curated by Leslie Ureña is on view through May 17. Burgess is the gallery’s first choreographer-in-residence. Company dancers in a Johannes Brahms suite were joined by Canadian soprano Millicent Scarlett and pianist Jeffrey Watson. The program concluded with “My Country ’Tis of Thee.” As a cultural envoy for the U.S. Department of State, the company has toured nationally and internationally and performed at the White House.
