Georgetown’s Call Your Mother ‘Jew-ish’ Deli Finally Opens

Call Your Mother, D.C.’s locally grown “Jew-ish” deli, officially opened in Georgetown at 35th & O Streets NW on Wednesday, July 29.

Since the beginning of 2020, residents and students — the main campus of Georgetown University is two blocks away — have awaited the popular bagel spot. A neighborhood Instagram icon, the colorful shop boasts 1,100 square feet dressed in the original pink from the building’s previous occupant, GreenWorks florist, and accented by Call Your Mother’s signature teal.

Co-owners and married couple Andrew Dana and Daniela Moreira won a hard-fought zoning variance from the Georgetown-Burleith advisory neighborhood commission to allow bagel toasting and takeout deli operations in the turn-of-the-century building.

Brooke Pinto, District Council member for Ward 2, where the store is located, tweeted: “I had concerns with the process and the long-term ramifications this variance could provide for the neighborhood. But, now that they are opening, of course I wish for their success!”

“We’re excited to become a part of this community. It feels like this space was meant for us,” said Moreira, who is also Call Your Mother’s executive chef. “We’ve been ready to open in Georgetown for months, and we know Georgetown has been ready for us, too. We’ve all been waiting on this for a while now and have been getting asked every day for the last six months when we’re opening. We’ve always believed we’d be a positive addition to the neighborhood. We’re just some friendly folks selling bagels and coffee out of an already pink corner building and we’re so grateful to have the opportunity to do that.”

According to Call Your Mother, customers can get its “woodfired bagels, chocolate babka muffins and favorite signature sandwiches — such as the beloved Gleneagle, made with candied salmon cream cheese, cucumbers, crispy shallots and seasonal greens on a za’atar bagel, and Sun City, stacked with bodega-style local eggs, American and Cheddar cheeses, spicy honey and either local bacon or pastrami on an everything bagel.”

Each Call Your Mother shop adheres to social distancing guidelines and only offers pickup service via online ordering. The Georgetown store will remain pickup-only until restrictions for restaurants are lifted. Other locations are in Park View, Capitol Hill and Bethesda, Maryland.

Call Your Mother Georgetown, located at 3428 O St. NW, is open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Online orders can be placed at callyourmotherdeli.com/order from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
