Inside the Ketanji Brown Jackson Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings (photos)

The Senate Judiciary Committee this week began historic U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who would be the first African-American woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. A Harvard Law graduate, Judge Jackson has served as a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit since 2021.

Here’s a look inside the hearings in Room 216 of the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, March 22. While  Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee dug in on culture war issues relating to race, crime and religion, Jackson presented herself as an even-tempered judge who relies on method, not judicial philosophy to remain neutral. When pressed on a political policy question, Jackson emphasized her approach to allowing Congress to do its job while she remains committed to “stay[ing] in my lane” as a judge rather than a policy-maker.
