•The fourth oldest home in Washington, D.C., is up for sale, and it just so happens to be in Georgetown. Prospect House, located at 3508 Prospect St. NW, is currently listed by Kim Gibson and Eileen McGrath of Washington Fine Properties for $15,995,000.
The home has eight bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and one half bath. It boasts 9,086 square feet and is located on .43 acres. Prospect House also has a coveted necessity—a three-car garage and additional parking for three cars.
The first floor has 12-foot ceilings, a formal entry hall, and a double parlor living room with twin Adams fireplaces. The banquet-sized dining room has a fireplace and river views, along with a gallery hall and an eat-in kitchen. The second floor includes seven large bedrooms, a sitting room and five full bathrooms. There’s also a 41-foot swimming pool and a watch tower where an early owner of Prospect House would keep an eye on his shipments coming into Georgetown harbor.
The home was designed by William Thornton, architect of the Capitol. It took six years to build, between 1787 and 1793. Designed in the Georgian-Federal style, the home has hosted politicians and prominent international and national figures since the Revolutionary War. Its previous owners and guests run like a who’s who of Washington elite throughout history. One owner was the first Secretary of Defense James V. Forrestal. Guests at the property have included President George Washington, President John Adams, the Marquis de Lafayette, the Shah of Iran, the President of France and poet Robert Frost.
The home served as the White House Guest House for visiting dignitaries during the Truman Administration. Prospect House has been well-maintained over the years, and the roof, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, as well as the windows, have all been replaced recently.
