Operatic ‘Renaissance Romances’ in McLean

The Washington Opera Society premiered a memorable operatic evening recently at the charming Carderock Falls Manor in McLean, Virginia. Robin Phillips served as the evening’s narrator, dressed in a grand costume befitting the “Renaissance Romances” theme of the evening. She delivered lively and witty introductions for each aria and duet.

This scintillating evening of singing was accompanied by the Washington Opera Society Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Julien Benichou. Soprano Kristin Sampson, a WOS regular, flew down from the New York City Opera and was joined on stage, first by two other sopranos — Juliette Di Bello and Manuela Korossy, both affiliated with the renowned Julliard School — and then by tenor Jason Karn of the Washington National Opera.

Their stellar voices enchanted the audience with operatic favorites from Verdi, Gounod, Bellini and more. Violinist Melanie Kuperstein captivated the packed theater with her moving rendition of Massenet’s “Meditation.”

Guests were greeted with an open wine bar and an opulent buffet reception before proceeding to the downstairs theater. During the intermission and after the show, they enjoyed a dessert reception. The event was a totally enjoyable fundraiser for the WOS.
