•Powerful Washingtonian Esther Coopersmith’s home has hit the D.C. real estate market. Coopersmith, who passed away in March at 94 years old, was one of the best-connected and loved Washingtonians who connected political parties, those from different countries, and more.
Her home is listed at $18.5 million. Coopersmith bought the home just over three decades ago for $3.35 million. It was built in 1924 by Adolf Miller, then chair of the Federal Reserve. Located at 2230 S St. NW, it has 28 rooms and measures 12,267 square feet. The home includes six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and three half baths.
Coopersmith was ever the consummate host, entertaining hundreds over the years in the home (in any given year, she would host 50 to 75 parties). She purposely renovated her dining room to seat 75 guests. Coopersmith considered President Joe Biden a close friend and the Queen Sirikit of Thailand was a recurring guest.
The mansion has a red brick and limestone façade, large Palladian windows and semi-circular driveway. The home flows beautifully for social gatherings, with almost 12-foot ceilings, ornate fireplaces, and a cozy family room and large kitchen. Outdoors, future residents can enjoy a fountain, pool, impeccable landscaping and surrounding gardens. There is a two-car attached garage plus additional parking for four to five cars—a hot commodity in Georgetown.
Coopersmith received the U.N. Peace Prize in 1984 for her support of dialogue and diplomacy in the Middle East. Photos of the home, listed by Jonathan Taylor of TTR Sotheby’s, can be found below.
