Georgetown’s Iconic Bank Dome to Be Restored

It is one of the most photographed and recognized sites of Georgetown: the iconic golden dome that caps off the PNC Bank at the busy intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue NW.

The bank building is more that a century old and was famously occupied by Riggs Banks for decades. Alas, its golden dome of late has begun to fade, upsetting residents and visitors alike. But, fear not, goldsmiths, chrysophilists and everyday people, the dome (or cupola, if you prefer) will soon be shining anew — better than ever.

The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has ordered the restoration of the dome of the historic bank. Work has begun on the delicate process. The scaffolding gives the corner a whole new Instagrammable vibe.

PNC told The Georgetowner: “The PNC Bank F&M branch in Georgetown is currently undergoing an exterior maintenance project which includes the restoration and gilding of the dome, a lighting upgrade, window replacements where needed, power washing and painting. As weather permits, work continues on the iconic branch, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in December 2023, and we look forward to providing the Georgetown community with a first-class client experience upon completion.”

“In addition to restoring the F&M branch, PNC is investing nearly $1 billion into its branch network to build more than 100 new locations and renovate more than 1,200 existing locations across the country.”

There’s also a great story to be told about the local firm, The Gilder’ Studio, doing the restoration work on the dome of the former Riggs Bank. Check out some of their projects on their website. Pretty impressive! https://gilders.com/
