Happy Birthday, President Carter!

Former President Jimmy Carter will reach a milestone tomorrow. The 39th president of the United States will be turning 100 years old. Despite losing his longtime love Rosalynn Carter in November 2023, President Carter has defied the odds—and then some.

Nine years ago, he spoke about how a bad cold he caught led to a physical, which led to a melanoma diagnosis in August 2015. He had had liver surgery earlier that month, where doctors identified cancer that spread to his brain. After receiving immune therapy, Carter has lived almost another decade despite what would have most likely been a six-month survival rate.

President Carter’s grandson Jason spoke recently on a Georgia politics show about how at 50 years old, how lucky he feels that he has been able to experience his grandfather as long as he has been able to do so.

“My children are 18 and 15, they have really long, deep memories of their great-grandfather,” he said during the show. “Those personal relationships are real and impactful just in that way, you know.”

President Carter is also excited to not only turn 100, but to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. During his interview, Jason went on to say that President Carter is eagerly awaiting his absentee ballot and like many Americans, he’s ready to turn the page on the Trump era of politics.

Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, human rights, promoting economic and social development and more.

He was born on October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia. He grew up peanut farming and has deep spiritual roots in the Baptist Church. He attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis and later married Rosalynn (Smith) Carter. They have three sons, John William “Jack,” James Earl III “Chip”, Donnel Jeffrey “Jeff,” and daughter Amy Lynn.

We at The Georgetowner are wishing a very happy triple digit birthday to President Carter!
