CAG Block Captains Honored at Concerts in the Park

“Bringing our neighborhood together is part of the Citizens Association of Georgetown’s (CAG) mission. Concerts in the Park and our robust Block Captain network fulfills that mission of connectivity,” said CAG Executive Director Brittany Sawyer. “We love seeing both new and familiar faces at our events and volunteering in our association. All are welcome at CAG.”
The Fall Concert in the Park and Block Captain Appreciation Celebration on Sunday, Oct. 6, welcomed over 300 neighbors of all ages – children, teens, parents, grandparents and friends, including furry friends.
On the beautiful autumn day, people spread out blankets and enjoyed refreshments from the food trucks – pizza, tacos, ice cream, and popsicles. The Fuss Band brought people to their feet and danced to upbeat tunes.
CAG also celebrated the neighborhood Block Captains, which represent 90 percent of blocks in Georgetown, and honored one standout volunteer Helen Darling with an award thanking her for dedication and commitment of community service.
“Block Captains serve as ambassadors for on their blocks, creating a line of communication and a sense of community around safety issues that impact us all,” expressed CAG public safety committee co-chair Mark Martinkov.
Through the Block Captain Alert System, alerts are sent out by Block Captains as safety issues arise. “Most alerts provide a synopsis of recent issues affecting the neighborhood and tips for crime prevention,” continued Martinkov. “Through both the timely distribution of information on specific crimes and on various crime prevention initiatives, CAG Block Captains promote a safe environment and ensure that neighbors are made aware of crime levels in Georgetown.”
While Georgetown has one of the most active and organized block captain programs in the District, CAG is seeking to maintain active block captains and continues to look for volunteers.
