Business Ins & Outs: Tesla Is On; Wawa Is Off

In: Tesla Electrifies M St.

The nation’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer opened a 4,500-square-foot showroom at 3307 M St. NW, having relocated from CityCenterDC.

Tesla moved — curiously enough — to the same M Street block in Georgetown that boasted a car dealership for decades. (The more things change … except those cars had internal combustion engines.) The new showroom has already sold a vehicle.

Out: Wawa to Fly the Coop Dec. 17

Wawa, the Pennsylvania-based convenience store empire with more than 800 locations, will close its Georgetown store at 1222 Wisconsin Ave. NW on Dec. 17.

Lori Bruce, Wawa’s Senior Manager for Media Relations, told The Georgetowner on Dec. 9: “After careful evaluations, Wawa is sorry to announce that our store located at 1222 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington, DC will permanently close on December 17. Please know that all our associates from this store will be given the opportunity to transfer to nearby Wawa stores. We appreciate the support of the community over the past few years, but at this point, our long-term plans for this store are no longer viable. The decision at this location was a business decision and included many factors which we apply to all our stores on an ongoing basis.  We are grateful for the support of the community, and we hope to continue serving them from our other stores.”

The store opened to great fanfare on Dec. 20, 2018, with speeches from corporate execs and local politicians — and free coffee and cupcakes.

Out: City Sliders

City Sliders — home of fusion cuisine sliders — at 1529 Wisconsin Ave. NW has closed. The eatery of multinational comfort food was also a winner for its Christmas decorations.

Out: Alkova

Alkova at 1510 Wisconsin Ave. NW, which opened in 2023, has closed. It offered yoga in a calm, co-working setting.
