Where to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Life and Legacy This Weekend


Celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at these six events.

MLK Shabbat: Visions of Freedom and Justice
Friday, January 17

Enjoy a moving service to commemorate the spirit and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Sixth and I. The service will feature music from Covenant Baptist UCC’s choir and Sixth and I musicians. There will also be words from Dr. Imani Romney-Rosa Chapman. Don’t miss post-service dessert and challah.

Another MLK Day of Service
Saturday, January 18

Pope Branch Park is also hosting a day of service with a park cleanup. The event is rain or shine and equipment will be provided. Don’t forget to wear closed-toe shoes too! The event is in partnership with Pope Branch Park Restoration Alliance and support from Grace Capital City Church and Washington Gas.

20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Walk and Parade
Saturday, January 18

This year’s theme is “Commit to the Noble Struggle for Equal Rights.” It will take place indoors this year at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Congress Heights. Participants will march into the arena from Cypress Street. There will also be performances, a health and wellness fair and more.

Let Freedom Ring Celebration
Sunday, January 19

The Kennedy Center will be hosting a “Let Freedom Ring Celebration,” an annual program that is part of the Millennium Stage performance series. It is hosted by Taye Diggs with performances by Christopher Jackson, Esperanza Spalding and others. Georgetown University will present the annual John Thompson Jr. Legacy of a Dream Award to Paula C. Thompson of Voices for a Second Chance.

MLK Day of Service
Monday, January 20

Shiloh Baptist Church Historic Sanctuary is hosting a day of service in honor of King’s legacy. Volunteers will create prayer blankets for the Northern VA Juvenile Detention Center and prep kits for distribution to places like Friends of Guest House, Bethany House and others.

Visit the MLK, Jr. Memorial

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is open 24/7 (check Inauguration websites for any closures). While you’re visiting, read and reflect on quotes from Dr. King that are engraved throughout the memorial.
