Badar Khan Suri, a post-doctoral fellow at Georgetown University, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week. Suri is an Indian national and is on a temporary non-immigration visiting scholar J permit for research and teaching “to continue his doctoral research on peace building in Iraq and Afghanistan” at Georgetown, according to court filings. ICE took Suri into custody due to allegedly being linked to a senior Hamas advisor (who is thought to be his father-in-law).

A federal judge ruled last week that the Trump administration could not deport Suri while his petition is being reviewed. He is currently at a detention facility in Louisiana.
Georgetown University students are protesting ICE’s actions, asking university leaders to take action. Students called on G.U. to secure Suri’s release and declare the campus a sanctuary campus.
