August Auction Block

This month, the Auction Block brings a Warhol screenprint, a terrazzo stool designed by David Wiseman, a signed FDR photograph, a collection of Iris Apfel’s rings and, speaking of rings, an annular (ring-shaped) clock.

Bonhams

David Wiseman Lattice Terrazzo Stool

Sold for: $48,640

This stool by Los Angeles designer David Wiseman, made of terrazzo with jade and granite on a bronze lattice base in a U shape, sold for nearly $50,000. Born in Pasadena in 1981, Wiseman studied furniture design at the Rhode Island School of Design. About 20 inches high, the stool, “from an iconic L.A. residence,” is one of an edition of 24 crafted in 2019.

The Potomack Company

FDR Signed Photograph with Winston Churchill

Estimate: $600–$800
Sold for: $6,000

This photograph, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was taken aboard the HMS Prince of Wales in August of 1941. It shows FDR and U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill at the secret wartime meeting known as the Atlantic Conference. The meeting resulted in the Atlantic Charter, which stated American and British goals for the post-World War II era.

Doyle

Group of Gold, Gold-Filled, Gilt-Metal and Gem-Set Rings

Estimate: $300–$500
Sold for: $3,840

Rings from the Iris Apfel Collection, set with freshwater and cultured pearls, garnets, turquoise, tourmaline and opals, sold for almost 10 times the lot’s estimate. The 23 rings ranged in size from 8 to 3. Apfel, a businesswoman and fashion icon who died in 2024 at 102, was known for her signature look of oversized glasses and whimsical accessories.

Christie’s

Andy Warhol’s “Turtle”

Estimate: $50,000–$70,000
Sold for: $94,500

This framed artist’s proof of Andy Warhol’s “Turtle,” a screenprint in pastel colors on Lenox Museum Board, is from 1985, just two years before the death of the Pittsburgh-born Warhol, “The Prince of Pop Art.” Signed in pencil and numbered “AP 35/50,” the print, connected with an edition of 250, was described as “in generally very good condition.”

Freeman’s | Hindman

A Gold, Enamel and Gemstone-Mounted Annular Clock

Estimate: $15,000–$25,000
Sold for: $32,000

This annular clock in gold and enamel with mounted gemstones was part of a July 30 sale called “The Collector’s Cabinet.” Annular clocks are typically vase-shaped, with the hours rotating on a ring. Though it bears marks from the Imperial Russian firm of Fabergé, they are spurious. The clock, 11¾” tall, is a 20th-century piece from a California collector.
