The annual Sawasdee DC Thai Festival on the National Mall returned to Washington, D.C. this weekend, bringing cultural performances, culinary experiences and community celebration to the heart of the city. Organized to highlight Thailand’s heritage and its connections with the local community, the event attracted a wide audience of residents, families and visitors.
Cultural performances were among the festival’s main attractions. Traditional Thai dancers in colorful attire performed on stage throughout the day, accompanied by live musicians. The performances introduced attendees to Thailand’s traditions and heritage.
Food was another highlight of the festival. Numerous stalls modeled after Thailand’s well-known street food markets served dishes such as pad thai, papaya salad and mango sticky rice. Drinks including Thai iced tea and juices were also available. Long lines at many stalls reflected the strong demand and enthusiasm for the food.
The live cooking showcase was a centerpiece of the program, featuring a roster of acclaimed chefs. Chef Arnold Myint, also known as Suzy Wong and recognized from Top Chef and the Food Network, combined culinary expertise with engaging presentation. Chef Dhanapol “Oak” Marprasert of Kam Rai Thai and Samsen Thai prepared modern interpretations of traditional dishes, while Chef Bas Anurat, currently at Na Rath and formerly chef for the Royal Thai ambassador, presented refined recipes from his diplomatic culinary background. The audience not only enjoyed the demonstrations but also had a chance to win vouchers for hotel stays in Thailand, adding extra excitement to the program. Their presentations highlighted the versatility and global reach of Thai cuisine.
In addition to the stage and food stalls, the festival featured colorful installations that quickly became a popular photo spot. Vibrant parasols decorated with floral designs, artistically painted elephant statues and large cubes covered with Thai cultural motifs created an eye-catching backdrop for visitors. One booth presented both traditional and contemporary Thai artwork, offering a glimpse into the country’s rich artistic heritage.
Festival organizers emphasized the event’s role in building community ties. By combining performances, food and interactive experiences, the Sawasdee DC Festival created a setting where cultural traditions could be shared directly with the public. Attendees expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage with Thai culture without leaving the city.
Organizers highlighted their commitment to continuing the festival as an annual fixture in Washington, D.C. The Sawasdee DC Thai Festival once again demonstrated the value of cultural exchange while offering residents a chance to experience Thailand’s traditions, artistry and cuisine locally.
