The 77th Emmys: Props to ‘The Pitt’

The 77th Annual Emmy Awards wrapped up last night with host Nate Bargatze. There were few big surprises, but streaming once again dominated with big wins from HBO Max, Apple TV+ and Netflix.

Those streaming shows included The Pitt, The Studio and Adolescence, which won for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Limited Anthology Series.

Host Bargatze started off strong, with a beginning sketch with SNL’s Mikey Day, Bowen Yang and James Austin Johnson that paid homage to Bargatze’s George Washington sketches. He then introduced a new game: he would donate $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of America, but if anyone’s acceptance speech went over 45 seconds, he would deduct $1,000. The bit started off more serious, with winners trying hard to stay within time, like Seth Rogen, who won one of the first awards of the night (Lead Actor in a Comedy Series).

As the night went on, acceptance speeches got longer as it was obvious Bargatze was going to pay $100,000, or more. Sure enough, Bargatze announced at the end of the night that the organization would get $250,000. Even though the joke fell flat, it felt good to see the Boys and Girls Club get a quarter of a million dollars.

Some highlights of the evening included tributes to The Golden Girls and Gilmore Girls, who both were celebrating milestones. Owen Cooper, 15, made history as the youngest ever male actor to win an award. He won for his role in Netflix’s Adolescence and took home the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie award.

Adolescence also won big, taking home awards in total.

The Studio, with a star-studded cast including Seth Rogen, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Zoe Kravitz, Martin Scorsese and more, broke a record for the most Emmy-winning comedy ever in one year, taking home 13 wins.

The medical drama The Pitt took home Best Drama, and its star Noah Wyle took home Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, and Katherine LaNasa, who plays head nurse Dana, took home Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Wyle, whose tux was made from scrubs brand FIGS, finished the acceptance speech for the series win by saying the Emmy was for all healthcare workers about to go on a shift or just coming off of one. LaNasa also thanked the nurses that inspired her character.

As always, it was fun to play spot the celebrity in the crowd, with Only Murders in the Building’s Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez having lots of fun, and those who could lip read spotted Gomez whispering to her fiancé, Reston’s Benny Blanco, that Short was texting his rumored girlfriend Meryl Streep.

Awards shows take a bit of a break for the fall season, with the season picking up in January with the Golden Globes.
