Since its inception in 2001, the Washington Award has recognized talented artists in the fields of music, dance, and visual arts. This year, in a renewed commitment to support our local community, applicants must show that they are either a resident of the greater Washington, DC area or that their work will be presented in Washington, DC.
This year the Washington Award offers two different types of awards:
- Cash Prize: This is the traditional Washington Award for candidates who wish to apply for a $12,500 cash prize. This prize will be awarded to one artist in each of the following disciplines (four awards total):
- Dance (Performance and Choreography)
- Music (performance or composition)
- Visual Art (studio-based or community based)
- Interdisciplinary Art
- Fillmore Prize: This is a new Washington Award for candidates who wish to apply for studio space at the Fillmore School, a historic building located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. The Fillmore is dedicated to the study of the arts and offers large, open studios and the Septime Webre Ballet Studio.
Candidates can apply for one-year usage of the dance studio or one of the eight studio spaces for use for the following disciplines:
- Dance (performance and choreography)
- Music (performance or composition)
- Visual Art (studio-based or community based)
- Interdisciplinary Art
- Awardees must conduct activities during the award year that benefits the local Washington, DC community, which may include but is not limited to:
- Present their work at open studio/gallery for the local community (not exceeding three gallery nights in 1 year rental term)
- teach a class open to the community members/neighbors
- develop a curriculum for a student studying the arts/mentor a future artist for a specific project
