“A Decade Afield” at the National Sporting Library & Museum

June 14, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm EDT

A Decade Afield

Jun 3, 2022 – Sep 18, 2022

The NSLM is celebrating a milestone anniversary with a retrospective exhibition opening June 3, 2022. A Decade Afield: Celebrating 10 Years of the NSLM’s Museum, will feature highlights from the Museum’s collection of fine art through a journey of thematic sections, including “The Start” showcasing the early collection, “Setting the Course” highlighting the Rogan donations, “Casting the Line” bringing together flyfishing painting and sculpture, and “A Record Pace,” a striking gallery of equine art holdings.

The National Sporting Library was founded in 1954. In 2010, the organization was officially rebranded to the National Sporting Library & Museum, with the Museum opening in the newly renovated Vine Hill building a year later. The early collection was bolstered heavily by Felicia Warburg Rogan’s donation of 15 important British sporting paintings, bringing John Emms; Lionel Edwards; John Frederick Herring, Jr.; Michael Lyne; Sir Alfred Munnings; and George Wright paintings to the galleries. The first exhibition, Afield in America, featured over 150 paintings covering 400 years of sporting art in America. Ten years later, our 47th exhibition highlights the growth of our collection, now numbering nearly 2,000 objects and including pieces by Franklin Brooke Voss, Herbert Haseltine, Henri DeLattre, Richard Stone Reeves, and Reuben Ward Binks, as well as contemporary pieces by Walter Matia, Diana Reuter-Twining, Nic Fiddian-Green, and Clarice Smith.

In anticipation of our anniversary celebrations, the Museum will close on May 2 as we prepare for the building-wide installation of its 47th exhibition, A Decade Afield: Celebrating 10 Years of the NSLM’s Museum and will reopen to the public on June 3.
