City Choir of Washington will present “The Holly and the Ivy: The Music of Christmas” on Dec. 17 as it continues to celebrate Robert Shafer’s 50th anniversary season as a choral director. The prestigious chorus will perform at 4:30 p.m. at National Presbyterian Church, 4101 Nebraska Ave. NW in Washington.
This year’s concert will feature music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Maurice Durufle, Eric Whitacre and Peter Latona, the Music Director at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. A special feature will be the world premiere of “Sweet Was the Song the Virgin Sang” written by Shafer. Also performing will be A CAPPELLA! from James Hubert Blake High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, under the direction of Sandra Zinkievich. The audience will get to participate with a sing-along of familiar carols and George Frederic Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.”
Shafer’s milestone year will be celebrated next May 5 with a gala event at the National Press Club. The chorus is also planning a concert tour of England July 3-12.
Tickets for the Dec. 17 concert, ranging from $15 to $50, can be purchased at www.citychoir.org. Student and group discounts are available. There is plentiful free parking at the church.
