In this class, students will learn how to create comic art and illustrations and learn how to develop their art skills through basic drawing, perspective, anatomy, character creation, and letter drawing. Through this, students will bring to life their ideas they wish to build upon. This is a class for beginner and novice artists.
All materials are included. Students will receive sketchbooks in class to practice assignments at home.
This class has a limited enrollment of six. Students will be required to wear surgical, KN95, or N95 masks and our classrooms will be set up for optimal social distancing. Required masks will be available in the main office if needed.
Each class will have a 10-15 min warm-up sketch session to loosen up on techniques.
Week 1. Drawing basics
⁃ Free drawing class everyone will draw to show where their skills are
⁃ Sketching, lines, shapes
⁃ Two-panel drawing comic strip
Weekly practice: Practice simple lines and sketching
Week 2. Point perspective
⁃ Warm-up perspective drawing, students will draw an area in the room
⁃ 1 point and two-point perspective drawing
⁃ Learning dimension through space and environment
Weekly practice: Four-panel comic strip focused on perspective
Week 3. Character creation
⁃ Warm-up sketching, warm-up circles drawing 30 secs, 1 min
⁃ Creating elements to character development. Description, mix and match, style of character.
Weekly practice: Fully develop created character.
Week 4. Reference drawing, postures, expressions
⁃ Warm-up sketches 1 min, 5 min, 10 min drawing from reference
⁃ Learning anatomy basics through shape as well as expressions
⁃ Building understanding of body type and face structures.
Weekly practice: Draw different poses for men and women (fill 5 pages front and back entire page) understanding how the body moves, bends, shape, or sizes.
Week 5. Reference drawing, postures, and expressions continued
⁃ Warm-up sketching drawing face expressions 10 mins
⁃ Continue working from drawing references, using different angles and expressions.
⁃ Understanding how light works on specific angels when drawing characters
Weekly practice: Use references to draw, create a character in different poses and expressions
Week 6. Final week
⁃ Warm-up drawing session. Free drawing 10 mins
⁃ Using techniques learned to draw 1-2 page comic, Using 4-6 panels.
