Documenting DC: Street Photography Workshop at the DC History Center

February 20, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm UTC+0

Architecture-focused street photography has long been key to documenting our city’s history in real time. With photography more accessible than ever, anyone can participate in capturing our ever-changing city for future generations.

In March 2020 the DC History Center signed the deed of gift for our first completely “born-digital” collection, nearly 2,000 original high-resolution images documenting every structure along 16th Street NW, from the District/Maryland Line at Blair Circle to St. John’s Episcopal Church at Lafayette Square. This collection was a passion project for photographers Roy Sewall and Joel Hoffman, who conducted 26 photo shoots from 2011 through 2019.

Now Sewall and Hoffman will share their expertise with you in a DC History Center online workshop on street photography (specifically, architecture). After a brief presentation on their 16th Street project, the instructors will provide tips on conducting a successful photographic survey, offer feedback on your photos, and answer questions.
