This documentary essay by Dyanna Taylor, granddaughter of Dorothea Lange, blends journals, letters, private discussions, home movies, and – of course – photographs, to create a compelling account of the famous American photographer’s complicated history. Constructed over a period of eight years, Grab a Hunk of Lightning is a personal celebration of one of America’s finest photographers. (Dyanna Taylor, 2014, digital, 120 minutes)
Preceded by a recently produced National Gallery video, Photography Like a Great: Dorothea Lange featuring Washington, D.C. photographer and native Dee Dwyer. Dwyer pursues documentary and portrait photography on the vibrant streets of Washington. Her lens captures the heart and soul of the Anacostia community where she grew up. Inspired by Lange’s storytelling, Dee crafts portraits that resonate with the struggles and triumphs of single mothers, drawing poignant parallels to Lange’s legendary Migrant Mother. (2024, 12 minutes)
Programmed in conjunction with the exhibition Dorothea Lange: Seeing People.
