“Richard-Hamelin has bold, original ideas about the music he plays, the emotional reservoirs to back them up, and the technical equipment to convey them without distraction.” —Gramophone
Québecois virtuoso Charles Richard-Hamelin joins the illustrious ranks of Hayes Piano Series artists in a program grounded in works by Chopin—a composer with whom he has been indelibly linked since winning both the Silver Medal and the Krystian Zimerman Prize (for sonata performance) in 2015’s International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Later, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) ranked two of his recordings of Chopin (at #2 and #6) in their list of “Our 20 favourite Canadian classical albums of 2019.” As the Toronto Star described his signature appeal: “This remarkable pianist shapes each phrase with careful attention, then links it to the next one in a way that tells a compelling story from beginning to end…—stretching time by slightly slowing down and speeding up, and playing with the silences between notes.”
