Determined Women: Collectors, Artists, and Designers at Hillwood
Through June 18, 2023
Hillwood founder Marjorie Merriweather Post was an astute business executive, discerning collector, and committed philanthropist. As a strong woman in a male-dominated world, she greatly admired her predecessors—influential women who ran countries, inspired reforms, supported culture, and created art and design. This special exhibition is the first at Hillwood to share the stories of the women behind the objects in the museum’s collection, rather than just of the artworks themselves. Featuring nearly 100 items, ranging from the 1700s to today, the exhibition will follow Marjorie Post’s and Hillwood’s collecting journeys through the lens of pieces featuring, created by, or inspired by women, illustrating the significant presence of women in the arts and demonstrating their diverse artworks and experiences. Explore the innovative and intrepid women at Hillwood, through the finest examples of portraiture, ceramics, enamel, fashion, and more.

Transparent or opaque, fragile yet impervious, glass has inspired artists and designers, stimulated scientists and engineers, and captivated collectors with its beauty and practicality. Hillwood founder Marjorie Merriweather Post was no exception, and she amassed over 1,600 pieces of glass, created in the 17th-20th centuries in Europe, Russia, and the United States. This special exhibition will highlight this lesser-known aspect of Hillwood’s collection, featuring a range of styles and techniques, while placing the historic creations in dialogue with astounding contemporary artworks. Featuring more than 300 items, ranging from the 1st/2nd century to today, the exhibition will demonstrate the innovation and talent of artists and designers throughout the world working with the challenging medium of glass and why the material has continued to intrigue and inspire. See glass in a new light through the finest examples of vases, chandeliers, drinkware, sculpture, and more.
