KAREN SEUFERT + TORE SVENSSON at JEWELERS’WERK GALERIE

June 10, 2023 @ 11:00 am - June 30, 2023 @ 5:00 pm EDT

Jewelers’Werk Galerie is pleased to present an exhibition of new and recent work by artist-jewelers Karin Seufert and Tore Svensson. The show opens on Saturday, June 10th with a reception to meet the artists from 12 – 4 pm and will remain on view through June 30th.

Seufert’s and Svensson’s brooches, necklaces, and rings in this collection feature both artists’ signature materials—PVC for Seufert and steel for Svensson—as well as porcelain pieces from a joint residency at the National School of Art and Design in Limoges, France. While both artists’ practices are rooted in non-precious materials and employ geometric forms, their respective inspiration differs. Seufert’s pieces in this group are about time and our attempts to make it tangible. “In the tear-off calendar, each page stands for a day, the date on it classifies it and the format gives it the sameness that every day has at the beginning. I chose this format for my brooches. The series started in Limoges with the porcelain ‘day-brooches’ and in parallel I worked on the PVC ‘day-brooches’…each PVC dot also talks about the intensity of the work and reflects the time that has gone into it… No day is like the other,” she reflects. For Svensson, however, inspiration comes from the super ellipse, a shape between a square and an oval invented by the French mathematician Gabriel Lamé (1795–1890) and common in architecture and design. He was also influenced by an encounter with super ellipse-shaped tables by Swedish designer Bruno Mathsson. Svensson explores this shape in steel and porcelain, paying particular attention to the surface, which he transforms with etching, hammering, color, and paint.

Originally from Germany, Karin Seufert studied in the Netherlands at the Schoonhoven vocational school and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her pieces are in the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et de la Mode in Marseilles, and the Racine Art Museum in Wisconsin, among others. Swedish artist Tore Svensson graduated from Gothenburg University, School of Design and Craft and attended Västerbergs Art School, in Gävle. His work is in the collections of notable museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the National Gallery of Australia. Both Seufert and Svensson have won multiple prestigious international awards and exhibited worldwide; they are based in both Berlin and Gothenburg, Sweden.

The exhibition is open during gallery hours: Monday through Saturday 11 am – 5 pm or by appointment. Jewelers’Werk Galerie is located at 3319 Cady’s Alley, NW in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. It is the longest-running and only contemporary art jewelry gallery of its kind in the greater Washington DC area, where owner and industry veteran Ellen Reiben shows precious and non-precious works by international artist-jewelers.
