Landmark Lecture: Commemorative Spaces: The National Mall

March 12 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Members: FREE | Non-Members: FREE

The National Mall is recognized across America and around the world as our nation’s preeminent commemorative space. It’s a role first established in the 1791 L’Enfant Plan for the capital then reinforced a century later in the 1902 McMillan Plan. Join Judy Scott Feldman, founding member and chair of the National Mall Coalition, to take a look at the historical evolution of the Mall, consider what is missing and examine modern proposals to improve the American story on the Mall.

Ms. Feldman is an art historian and native Washingtonian, and a founding member of the National Mall Coalition, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization founded in 2000. The Mall Coalition advocates comprehensive visionary planning for the Mall in Washington DC to ensure the vitality, beauty and continued active role of this stage for democracy in the capital and in American life. Ms. Scott Feldman received her BA and MA in art history from Penn State University and her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. Giving Mall talks to tourists groups, including Road Scholar, has given her broad insight into how Americans from all over the country experience the Mall – and are eager to know more.
