Denise Rolark Barnes, publisher of The Washington Informer, will host a virtual discussion with Gwen Carr, an activist known for her work following the death of her son, Eric Garner, at the hands of police. The conversation will air on March 1 during “Let’s Talk” streamed live on Youtube and Facebook at noon.

The E.R.I.C. Initiative Foundation: Carr will introduce her nonprofit, which stands for Eliminating Racism & Inequality Collective, aimed at addressing systemic racism and promoting equality.
Personal Loss: The discussion will delve into Carr’s personal tragedy of losing her son to police violence for allegedly selling loose cigarettes, underscoring the urgency of ensuring this does not happen to another family.
Disproportionate Policing: Carr will talk about the targeted policing of Black men and women over minor offenses such as cigarette sales.
Menthol Cigarette Ban: The conversation will also explore concerns over the menthol cigarette ban’s potential to disproportionately affect Black adults, possibly leading to increased smoking rates and police interactions.
Protect Black Women and Girls Act: Carr will discuss the importance of the bipartisan act aimed at safeguarding Black women and girls.
