HISTORIC PASTORAL APPOINTMENT AT THE NATIONAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Washington, D.C. – The National Presbyterian is delighted to announce the appointment of the Rev. Dr. Raymond I. Hylton, Sr. as the new senior pastor of the church. Dr. Hylton will begin his new role on Sunday, June 11th. You are invited to celebrate and welcome him at receptions following the 8:45 and 11:00 am worship services.
The National Presbyterian Church was established in 1946 and has a long and rich history of serving the Washington, D.C. community. Over the years, the church has welcomed many notable guests, including Presidents Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton, as well as members of Congress, foreign dignitaries, and other leaders. The church has also been a strong advocate for social justice and outreach programs, including the establishment of the National Presbyterian School, which serves students from pre-kindergarten through 6th grade.
A multigenerational church, National Presbyterian Church (NPC) is made up of approximately 1,300 members from Maryland, D.C. and Virginia and holds both traditional and contemporary services every Sunday.
Dr. Hylton comes to the National Presbyterian Church after serving as the senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Evanston, Illinois, where he has been since 2009. Prior to that, he served churches in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and New Castle, Pennsylvania. He is an exceptional preacher, teacher, and leader, with a dynamic and energetic presence in the pulpit. Dr. Hylton’s intellectual capacity, spiritual maturity, and passion for discipleship and mission have impressed the church’s leadership. Dr. Hylton’s appointment is historically significant as he is NPC’s first Black senior pastor.
Dr. Hylton has extensive experience partnering for engagement with students and young adults, having served in a university town—Evanston is the home of Northwestern University. His strategies for deepening and connecting pathways of discipleship and leading a multi-generational church are exciting to the church.
A devoted family man, Dr. Hylton is happily married to his childhood sweetheart, Judith, who is a licensed clinical professional counselor and a former educator. Together, they are the grateful parents of three adult children: Judene, Ray Jr., and Joel. Dr. Hylton and Judith are the authors of a book on Christian marriage, Five Disciplines of a Growing Marriage: Falling in Love Again. Judith is also the author of The Faith of the Pastor’s Wife: Surviving in Ministry Yet Remaining in Love with God and His People.
“We are overjoyed to welcome Dr. Hylton and his wife Judith to the NPC family,” said the National Presbyterian Church Session and Pastor Nominating Committee in a joint statement. “Please join us in prayers of joy and thanksgiving as we embark together on this new stage of God’s journey for us at NPC. Let’s pray for Dr. Hylton and Judith as they make their transition and give thanks to God for the work and vision of the leadership that contributed to the search effort.”
Dr. Hylton is a graduate of Duke University Divinity School. He received his Doctorate of Ministry from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and also holds a master’s degree in pastoral leadership from Huntington University. His undergraduate degree is from Taylor University, a Christian university in Indiana.
