Free

Discover how craft artists have shaped the cultural identity of the United States. Join the Smithsonian American Art Museum for a virtual conversation featuring author and craft historian Glenn Adamson. Learn more about Adamson’s most recent publication, Craft: An American History (2021) and how artisanship has had an impact on education, equality, and class in the United States. From the colonists’ desire to define themselves separately from England to the makers movements of recent decades, dive deeper into the stories of these artists to see how handmade creations are central to the continued development of a “more perfect union.”

This virtual book talk features Adamson and Gloria Kenyon, Senior Public Programs Coordinator for the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It is part of SAAM’s ongoing series New Writings in American Art, highlighting new scholarship and publications in the field of American art. Glenn Adamson is a curator, writer, and historian based in New York. He has previously been Director of the Museum of Arts and Design; Head of Research at the V&A and Curator at the Chipstone Foundation. Adamson’s publications include Thinking Through Craft (2007); The Craft Reader (2010); Postmodernism: Style and Subversion (2011, co-edited with Jane Pavitt); The Invention of Craft (2013); Art in the Making (2016, co-authored with Julia Bryan-Wilson); and Fewer Better Things: The Hidden Wisdom of Objects (2018).
