Shakespeare’s Sisters: Say Her Name explores the poetry of Black women in America. This virtual seminar and writing workshop for adults begins a new session exploring poets such as June Jordan, Ai, Lucille Clifton, Rita Dove, Tracy K. Smith and others. From the Black Arts Movement to Cave Canem to recent Poet Laureates, these poets speak to the contemporary moment with many still alive and producing work.The course will run on Wednesdays from 5pm-7pm (December 1 session will be 4pm-6pm).

Session one runs October 6 through October 27.
Session two runs November 3 through December 1.

In June 2021, Ann Patchett travelled from her home in Nashville, Tennessee to visit the home museum of Eudora Welty in Jackson, Mississippi. After touring the home and gardens in communion with Welty’s spirit, Patchett ended the tour in the living room where she delivered this lecture and conversation. Patchett’s collection of essays, These Precious Days, will be published by Harper Collins in 2021 and this lecture, “The Nightstand,” will be included.

Inspired by When the Light of the World Was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through, an Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. This landmark anthology celebrates the Indigenous peoples of North America, the first poets of this country, whose literary traditions stretch back centuries. One of the contributors, Tacey M. Atsitty and one of the editors, LeAnne Howe, will read from their own poetry and highlight the writings of other emerging Indigenous poets. This reading will be followed by a moderated conversation where audience members can also ask their own questions.

Each year, the Folger Poetry Board, supporters of the O.B Hardison Poetry series, selects a distinguished poet to share their favorite poems from other poets and to read from their own work. Martín Espada follows in the steps of noted poets Billy Collins, Seamus Heaney, Rita Dove, Octavio Paz, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Carol Ann Duffy, all former Folger Poetry Board Readers, a designation which began in 1991 with Mr. Heaney.
