Each of the Portrait of a Nation honorees will assume their rightful place in American history by becoming a part of the Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection with either newly commissioned portraits by contemporary artists or acquired portraits. The awards will be presented at the Portrait of a Nation Gala (formerly called the American Portrait Gala – note the name has changed) on November 12, 2022 – a celebratory evening at the Portrait Gallery that supports the museum’s endowment and work with contemporary artists.
