Present Moment BASK

Jane Franklin Dance at Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival 2023
BASK in the present moment. Physical storytelling merges with the immediate in dances about climate, agency and identity. Works by Robert J. Priore, Lauren DeVera, Sarah Ewing, Jane Franklin, Ryan Carlough traverse political fault lines, resonate with vestiges of the past, and comfort with moments of intimacy and optimism.
(Appropriate for all ages. There will be an artist talk-back following the performance.)
Jane Franklin’s Stratum contrasts the desire to not-be-seen with the opposite urge to become larger than life. Spanish guitar by Manuel Granada, “Romance Anonimo” accompanies duets that accumulate and dissolve. Music by Astor Piazzolla and Vio-dion Duo anchor layered movement.
SAND (SALT), a premier by Sarah Ewing, is a dance about the last few steps before a story begins. When your feet can touch the sand but your body is still surrounded by the waves of the ocean. You have almost arrived but not quite yet – it’s that last burst of energy before you can start. Original music is “Burning Bridges” by Kangding Ray
Testify is a new work by Lauren DeVera. The movement is set to music by the Taco Shop Poets with poetry by Bennie Herron. “Herron’s poetry presents a prismatic lens on his upbringing as a Black man, including close observations of the familial, interpersonal, and cultural forces that have shaped him.”
Shake, a premier by Jane Franklin, features fragmented movement that mirrors the rhythm of the spoken word. Poetry, written and performed by Bennie Herron, is interspersed within segments of movement to drive the dance narrative through voice, rhythm and cadence. “Herron’s verse style is informed in part by the socially conscious Hip Hop artists of the 1990s and poets of the Black Arts Movement of the late 1960s, among a myriad of other sources.”
Ryan Carlough’s This Is takes a look at the relationship between employees. Individual perspectives are relayed when an “incident” occurs. Original music is by local artist Violet Barnhart.
Robert J. Priore’s new work Untitled frames a partnership within a larger group dynamic. Music is by Sofian Parmart “Madagascar”, “Why Hurt the One Who Loves You” by Roy Orbison, and “Gysgewys” by Amsterdam Klezmer Band
