Profs and Pints DC presents: “Chaos in Congress,” an analysis of the speakership battle in the U.S. House of Representatives, with Matthew Green, professor of politics at Catholic University and author of The Speaker of the House: A Study of Leadership.
The House of Representatives has faced a series of unprecedented struggles over its selection of a Speaker. Kevin McCarthy was chosen in January after a grueling 15 rounds of balloting and, nine months later, became the first speaker in U.S. history to be ousted. One Republican candidate after another failed in their bids to replace him, leaving the House paralyzed at a time of major policy challenges at home and abroad.
Why has this happened? What does it portend for the future of our democracy? Hear such questions tackled by Professor Matthew Green, a scholar of congressional politics who has been a go-to source for journalists seeking to make sense of Congress’s recent turmoil.
In discussing the causes and consequences of the House’s current dysfunction, he’ll explain how the blame doesn’t lie solely with the difficult governing environment for the Republican Party. Also responsible are longer-term developments in American politics, particularly within the GOP, that will make it difficult for the party to govern even after a Speaker is chosen.
