Profs and Pints DC presents: “The Shift in the War on Ukraine,” a look at Russia’s new approach to attacking Ukraine and its implications for U.S. foreign policy, with Michael Kimmage, professor of history at Catholic University, fellow at the German Marshall Fund, and former U.S. State Department planner for Russia and Ukraine.
The brutal war that Russia launched in Ukraine in late February has moved on to a new phase, which was precipitated by the concentration of Russian forces directed at Ukraine’s east and south. Come gain a deep understanding of what this shift means with Dr. Michael Kimmage, an expert on that region who already has delivered several excellent Profs and Pints talks on the conflict.
He’ll start by analyzing the first phase of the war, in which Russia had intended to deliver a lightning strike that would topple Ukraine’s government. It didn’t go that way, of course. It ended up representing a partial failure for Russia and a partial victory for Ukraine, though at the cost of immense destruction and countless atrocities committed by Russians on Ukrainian soil.
What was unclear as Russia shifted its forces to Ukraine’s east and south was whether this signified a new means of carrying out the previous strategy of trying to destroy Ukraine’s government, or represented a prelude to an effort to declare an end to the war after seizing specific Ukrainian regions.
Dr. Kimmage, who previously held the Russia/Ukraine portfolio as a member of the U.S. Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Staff, will discuss the shift in the war and its implications for U.S. foreign policy based on the latest information we have before he takes the stage.
