Profs & Pints DC: Ukraine’s Peace Prospects

April 3, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

$13.50 – $17

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Ukraine’s Peace Prospects,” a look at how its war with Russia might end, with Michael Kimmage, professor of history at Catholic University and former U.S. State Department planner for Ukraine and Russia.

The fighting in Ukraine continues more than a year after Russia began its brutal invasion of that country in February 2022. Among the more recent developments have been Russia’s assault on the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut and Russian missile strikes on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.

Yet there are many signs that Russia and Ukraine are at a point of exhaustion in this already long war. Both sides are shouldering huge and growing costs and struggling to amass ammunition.

Join Michael Kimmage, an expert on that region, as he looks at the question of whether conflict might end soon—perhaps after a series of offensives this spring and summer.

Dr. Kimmage has been giving excellent Profs and Pints talks on the war since even before it began and, in many cases, has been amazingly accurate in his predictions of what might happen next. In this talk he’ll look at what the end of this war might look like, which side is likely to prevail, and whether the end of the war will be decided on the battlefield or the negotiating table. Turning his attention to home, he’ll also look at the various pressures on the Biden administration to hasten this terrible war’s end.

Among the questions he’ll tackle: What role will the United States play in the next phase of the conflict? What should its objectives be? Is it time for Washington to press for a termination of the war, or should it be patient, increase its support for Ukraine, and ready itself for war that might last for years to come? (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)
