Profs and Pints presents, “Elections in the Trump Era,” with John Sides, professor of political science at George Washington University and co-author of Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Battle for the Meaning of America.
How did Donald Trump win the 2016 election, and what does that mean for the future of party politics in the United States?
Was the election more about racial anxiety, or economic anxiety? Should Democrats blame their loss on James Comey or Russian propaganda? Why did Democrats rebound so quickly in 2018, and what does that mean for 2020?
Professor Sides tackled such question in Identity Crisis, a new book that provides an in-depth account of the presidential election that defied the predictions of pundits and pollsters.
He’ll draw upon hard data and social-science evidence to discuss his key findings. Among them: Even before Trump ran for office, the Democratic and Republican parties were moving further apart on race and immigration. It was racial anxiety, not economic anxiety, that became more important to voters in 2016, to the extent that racial anxiety even drove economic anxiety. Since the Trump presidency, party divides over race and immigration have gotten even worse.
Professor Sides will show how understanding American politics today–and for the future–means understanding identity politics. (Time listed is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please arrive in plenty of time to place any order and be seated and settled before the talk begins.)
