Profs and Pints presents: “Understanding the Mueller Investigation,” with Randall D. Eliason, law professor, white-collar crime expert, Washington Post columnist, and former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and chief of that office’s public-corruption section.
The ongoing investigation by Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller, III is the most consequential legal and political proceeding since Watergate. Mueller is charged with investigating Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election and the possible involvement of members of the Trump campaign. For nearly two years there has been a nonstop stream of indictments, guilty pleas, and breaking news, as the investigation has moved closer and closer to president Trump’s inner circle and people like Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and Roger Stone have become household names.
Join white-collar crime expert and former federal prosecutor Randall D. Eliason for a fun and informative overview of the history and current status of the Mueller investigation. He’ll discuss how the investigation began and what it means to be a “Special Counsel.” He’ll review the major players, including those already charged and those still under suspicion. He’ll look at the key criminal statutes that might be implicated and discuss whether Rudy Giuliani is correct when he claims that “collusion” is not a crime.
The talk will examine the cases already brought by Mueller, including the two major indictments of Russian actors charged with interfering with the election, as well as the cases that have “spun off” from the Mueller investigation, such as the “hush money” payoffs to Stormy Daniels.
We’ll conclude with Washington’s current favorite parlor game: outright speculation about when and how it all might end. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors and talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself adequate time to place orders and be seated and settled in.)
