Profs & Pints: Witches and Witch Hunts

October 10, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm UTC+0

$12 – $15

Profs and Pints presents: “Witches and Witch Hunts,” with Mikki Brock, assistant professor of British history at Washington and Lee University and scholar of demonology, witchcraft, and early modern Scotland.

She’s back! Forget Agent Dana Scully of the X-Files. With Halloween on the horizon, Profs and Pints brings you someone even better: Mikki Brock, an expert on some of the scariest truths out there.

In the first of two nights the Bier Baron, Professor Brock will reprise this year’s most popular Profs and Pints talk, discussing the history of witch hunts, both real and rhetorical.

Last year, Donald Trump tweeted that he was the victim of “the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history!” Critics of the #MeToo movement have warned of a “Salem atmosphere” in Hollywood and beyond. But what does it really mean when men in positions of power claim to be victims of a “witch hunt”? And what about the real history of the witch trials, which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of women in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Europe?

Come explore such questions with Professor Brock, who teaches a class on witch-hunts at Washington and Lee and is the author of Satan and the Scots: The Devil in Post-Reformation Scotland, c.1560-1700. (Advance tickets $12. Doors $15, save $2 with student ID.)
