In the season finale program for its 2023.24 season, The Washington Ballet commissioned internationally acclaimed choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa to curate a special evening, including her lauded 2019 TWB commission, Delusional Beauty live on stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Other works from emerging choreographers selected by Ms. Lopez Ochoa will elevate diverse voices and new perspectives in dance. Don’t miss this unforgettable night of dynamic and groundbreaking performances.
Delusional Beauty with choreography by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is a restaging of the premiere work Annabelle created for The Washington Ballet in 2019 which draws inspiration from the surrealistic painting of Salvador Dali titled Femme à la tête de fleurs (Woman with a Head of Flowers).
“I’m always filled with gratitude when an older work gets revived. It sheds light on who I was at the time and what my preoccupations were. It is exciting to see a new cast of dancers interpreting the work. Delusional Beauty is inspired by a painting by surrealist Salvador Dali “La femme à la tête de fleurs”. Paintings are a huge source of inspiration. I believe that each painting carries a soul. By bringing the characters of the painting into movement, I release them from their frozen state into the transient state of dance.” – ANNABELLE LOPEZ OCHOA
colōrem with choreography by Chanel DaSilva is a restaging of the 2022 world premiere by the Joffrey Ballet with music by Cristina Spinei.
“Chanel DaSilva is an artist driven by strong conceptual ideas which she then translates with lots of emotions. It makes her dances visually arresting and human. She is an intelligent woman and I love her activism for moving the art form forward and making it more inclusive. Her work Colorem is an ensemble piece that requires commitment and tight togetherness of the dancers.” – ANNABELLE LOPEZ OCHOA, CURATOR FOR BEYOND BOUNDARIES
A Dancer’s Prayer choreographed by Houston Thomas is a world premiere new work with The Washington Ballet.
“Houston Thomas is a young American choreographer who danced most of his career in Europe. His work is hyper-kinetic and deeply rooted in the classical ballet vocabulary. With this new voice, I want to challenge the TWB dancers with his high-demanding choreography.” – ANNABELLE LOPEZ OCHOA, CURATOR FOR BEYOND BOUNDARIES
