Thomas Circle Singers to Perform David Lang’s the little match girl passion
March 15, 2025 | Live! at 10th & G
WASHINGTON, DC — Thomas Circle Singers (TCS), Washington’s renowned chamber choir committed to inspiring compassion through music, presents David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work, the little match girl passion. This moving concert will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM, at Live! at 10th & G in Washington, DC.
Lang’s poignant and innovative composition reimagines Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless story of The Little Match Girl through the lens of a traditional “passion”—a musical form historically used to narrate and reflect on Christ’s suffering. Inspired by J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Lang weaves a narrative that resonates with modern audiences, inviting listeners to reflect deeply on themes of compassion, empathy, and shared humanity.
“We are thrilled to present this powerful work to our community,” said Miles Canaday, Artistic Director of Thomas Circle Singers. “the little match girl passion challenges us to engage with universal themes of suffering and hope, connecting Andersen’s classic tale to our own shared experiences.”
In partnership with NW Community Food, TCS encourages concert attendees to bring donations of cleaning supplies, reusable bags, tea bags, or hot chocolate mix to support local families in need.
